I know I'm not the only one disappointed with the horror selection offered on Netflix. Movies about the demonic seventies home have dipped well into overkill, and I've watched Scream more than I can count. But sometimes you can still find something fresh.
Here's one for you.
Maddie is a writer at work on a new novel. She's home alone in the woods. It's evening. Insert extra cliche here, it's nothing we all haven't seen before.
But Maddie is deaf, and when her neighbor is brutally murdered outside the kitchen window it all goes unnoticed.
Their cat-and-mouse game has already begun by the time she realizes what's going on. Her masked stalker has stolen her cell phone. Maddie finds him standing on the front porch, taunting her with it, and fastens all the doors before he can get back in.
The killer may be locked out, but that doesn't mean he can't mess with the circuit breakers, dismantle her internet connection, or just wait until a third party arrives.
Rote at points, but keep watching. Hush's last half is all anxiety and much more psychological than anticipated. Don't get me wrong, there's still a significant amount of blood. The killer carries a crossbow and happens to be a good shot.
If you enjoyed Wait Until Dark and When a Stranger Calls you'll like Hush, an eighty-minute hybrid of sorts.
