My Shudder Picks: They Look Like People

My Shudder Picks: They Look Like People

I figured I would bring it back to the twenty-first century with this one. And I must say, given the film at hand, am most certainly glad I did. They Look Like People is one of the most interesting horror films I've seen in a while.

Wyatt is down on his luck. He's lost his job and fiancee at around the same time, before giving his buddy Chris a surprise visit. The visit, in turn, coincides with similar problems for Chris. He loses his own job, along with it a love interest; he begins to drink excessively. Meanwhile Wyatt receives mysterious phone calls from a man with a mechanically deep voice.

In due time, both guys start to get a little crazy. Or so you think. The problem becomes a case of who is credible and who is not. Is Wyatt nuts? Or is it Chris and his lady friend that are the ones who are crazy? The editing is done to purposely throw off the viewer, creating a highly effective sense of disorientation. Having just ran through this film once, I have to admit I'm still a bit unsure what was really happening here.

This movie is easily the lowest budget film we've ran through since I started writing about Shudder. There is no viscera, no gore, no effects. The actors, though most very impressive, are all relative unknowns. But the writing and shot work is excellent, together creating a highly moody film which will keep you creeped out long after you've watched.
