Mask
Yes, before the Jim Carrey movie, there was simply Mask. This one is a true story about a teenage boy named Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz) who was born with a rare condition called craniodiaphyseal dysplasia.
Rocky's irregularly overgrown skull has left him very disfigured, and doctors continue to give him limited time to live. By the time he hits high school, he's managed to best huge odds, which is when most of Mask takes place.
Segment where he falls in love with Laura Dern (Big Little Lies) while working as a counselor at a summer camp for the blind is tough to watch.
Clearly not the happiest offering here, but charismatic performances by Stoltz, Cher (as his mother), and Sam Elliott combined with a great rock soundtrack bring it all to life.
Not that this prepares most of us for the ending.
