Holy Sh*t - Notes on 2020, Vol. 5

I have to confess— after the release of the fourth volume of this ‘Holy Shit’ business, I was at a loss. For a moment I thought, oh fuck, I’ve finally drained the insight reservoir for COVID, BLM opposition, and all other miscellaneous salt-throwing entities that aggravate our 2020 wounds. But then I remembered all I got to do is scroll any social media platform for twelve seconds and I might have something to talk about.

A Trump sentimentalist used that recent photograph of him walking across the White House lawn looking worn out with his tie undone to convey how much the man has sacrificed in order to be president. They remarked how he has foregone billions of dollars to be our leader, and used his age to remind us that he could otherwise be golfing as a retiree and overall leading a privileged, stress-free life. But I say, please. Please don’t do that.

He loves that he’s in the oval office, just like he loves that there’s people who cry on his behalf. Why shouldn’t he? It makes him the center of everyone’s attention. President Trump knows how theatrical he is, and love him or hate him, it’s hard not to listen when he speaks. He’s like the Howard Stern of the American presidency; his words are shocking, frequently irreverent and offensive, but hell if I don’t want to hear what he’s going to say next. It’s almost brilliant, when you consider how many US citizens stick their necks out for him after all that has been said and done. Not to mention all of the other Republican politicians, who play his game, and don’t risk getting on his bad side. For someone who is incapable of empathy, he sure gets a lot of it.

If he’s feeling as world-weary and under-appreciated as the aforementioned sentimentalist suggests, then maybe he should pull a Lyndon Johnson and not run again. He’s allowed, why not? Just bow out. Thanks for trying, sir, things got pretty fucked up here and there, but all the same, thanks for trying.

It was probably a waste to even try and make such a suggestion. This man is from Queens. He will run with every hostile northeastern fiber of his being and nail that incumbent win. Trump is a competitive, stubborn son of a bitch who will fight dirty, then clean, and then extra dirty again. He’ll take it any way he can get it, and if he could do it a third time, he would do it with the same level of narcissism and ardor that he employs toward ignoring the social problems and racist atrocities taking place right now. What makes him frightening is that there’s no one man enough to try to pump his brakes.
